Nonlinear Magneto-optics

Nonlinear Optics in a BEC

Superradiance image
Preliminary results

These experiments focus on exploring the magneto-optics of Raman-superradiance. In particular, for particular configurations of magnetic field and polarization, the optical Faraday rotation is expected to exhibit an unusual oscillation as the atomic sample cycles between optically dark and bright states. This cycling occurs via an interplay between the magnetic field, which tends to drive the atomic spins out of the dark state, and superradiance, which causes rapid pumping back into the dark state as the superradiance threshold is crossed. Preliminary results are illustrated to the right.
