"Matrix Product States: A local perspective on correlated quantum many-body systems"

ABSTRACT

Matrix Product States: A local perspective on correlated quantum many-body systems from a local perspective. They faithfully approximate ground states of local Hamitonians which makes them powerful numerical tools, while at the same time their ability to explain the global behavior of quantum many-body systems from the local properties makes them useful for analytical studies. In my talk, I will give an introduction to Matrix Product States as analytical and numerical tools. To illustrate the power of the MPS framework, I will show that MPS allow to obtain a classification of symmetry protected topological phases from local symmetries, therby generizing Landau's framework for the classification of phases, and explain how they allow to design an order parameter which allows to distinguish these phases with a single measurement.
