"Spin liquids and non-quasiparticle matter in cold atoms"
ABSTRACT
Experiments on nano-Kelvin ultracold atoms have realized canonical models of strongly correlated solid state systems in a pristine, tunable way. I will describe recent theoretical and experimental advances tha topen current experiments to a world of "exotic" physics beyond the traditional framework of symmetry breaking and quasiparticles. I will argue that, despite the low temperatures required, one may realize spin liquids --- states of matter characterized by properties beyond their symmetry. Additionally, I will give a prescription for observing and characterizing non-quasiparticle excitations emerging near quantum phase transitions.
